
The tax man is here and requires you to file your tax returns by 30th of June or face a 10,000 penalty or 5% of tax due. Whichever is higher.
Tax returns should be filed online via the KRA porthole https://itax.kra.go.ke/KRA-Portal/# . The process is very easy and will take a short amount of time to complete. In case of any difficulty there is a myriad of resources on the internet and on the KRA Website to help you out in the process.
The only requirements to file your taxes are the P9 form for the employed, which is provided by the employer. For the self-employed you will need a profit and loss statement. For those not in employment such as students, they will be required to file a return. However, it will be a nil return.
Companies with an annual turnover of at least five million shillings are required to apply for VAT. Also to note is that companies are required to file a biannual return or face a 10,000 shilling fine.
