Safaricom has rolled out M-Pesa tap and pay solution across 5 more towns in a bid to shorten the mobile money platforms’ transaction process. Safaricom is looking to sign up businesses and service providers across Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret and Nyeri after carrying out a successful pilot run in Nakuru.
According to Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore, Tap and Pay is meant to increase the accuracy and privacy of Lipa Na M-Pesa transactions by ensuring that payments are delivered to a matching merchant in the shortest time possible.
How it works
Safaricom Customers who wish to use Tap and Pay will have to obtain an M-Pesa 1Tap wristband, phone sticker or card that will allow payment integration with the service provider, Safaricom.
To make a payment, a merchant will key in the payment amount into their point of sale device. The customer will then tap the tag to the device, either the phone sticker, the wristband or the Card. A pop-up message will appear on the customers’ phone requesting for their Mpesa PIN whereby the customer will proceed to key in their PIN to approve payment.
The tags will cost the customers 20 shillings only and can be purchased from Safaricom stores within the 6 towns that the service is active in.
