MultiChoice Kenya made a kill this past year due to travel bans and curfews imposed by the government due to Covid-19 and in order to retain the gains made last year. MultiChoice has decided to launched a campaign dubbed DSTV Step Up Promotion for DSTV users obviously and Changamkia Maximum Discount for GoTV users. I’m really interested by the choice of tag lines for the two yet similar campaigns for the brands
This is how the two campaigns work, DSTV subscribers currently on the low-end tariff plan dubbed Access that cost Sh1,000 a month can pay Family charges which is Sh1,380 to watch the Compact package that goes for Sh2,650 per month. So basically if you pay for the next tier of channels which costs higher than your current you get to watch the next tier of channels.
For the GOtv Changamkia Maximum Discount, an active or a disconnected GOtv Lite, Value and Plus customer, can upgrade their packages to GOtv Max at a discounted rate of only Sh890.
Multi Choice Kenya is operating almost at a monopoly in Kenya as there is no formidable opponents in that arena and their main challenge seems to be customer retention.
My thoughts on pay TV
I think pay TV is overated and would not recommend it for homes especially since the average Tv watch time for Kenyans is less than 5 hours. Everybody is on the internet now.
Another reason I would not recommend it is because most of the international channels on GoTv and the cheaper DSTV packages are a constant repetition of either too old movies or TV series done ten years ago, same case for TV shows.

Maisha Magic is the only upside to this Pay TV platform simply because Kenyan content is actively showcased to the wider African community, but that comes at a cost as well.
