For a chance to win a tractor, John Deere Africa Middle East has teamed up with the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and Mascor to host a business plan writing competition for young SME groups in Kenya.
The competition, which runs until March 31, 2022, is accessible to groups that have operated in the agriculture sector for the previous three years and are individuals aged 18 to 35.
Each team will be expected to produce a business plan for the operation and management of a mechanization service provider. The winning business idea will receive a John Deere tractor (50 horsepower, 5050D TWD) to get started.
Despite early successes, the region’s tractor adoption has lagged behind demand. Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania had more tractors in use in 1960 than India, but India had 100 times the number of tractors in use by 2005.
The joint competition is the result of AGRA and John Deere’s recent agreement to encourage successful mechanization service providers using the John Deere S.M.A.R.T Model.
AGRA assists small and medium-sized businesses with business skills and financial management for growth, while John Deere provides training operators, technician development, after-sales services, and equipment financing.
Mascor, Kenya’s John Deere dealer, will provide aftermarket services, parts, and other assistance to the competition winner.
