Arsenal might be having a shitty season, but, off the field, their fans continue to show unwavering support, optimism, and love for their club as was evident this past weekend during a tree planting event organized by Arsenal Kenya Supporters Club, Eldoret Branch.
Heeding the call by Environment and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko, Eldoret Arsenal supporters with the coordination of Kenya Forest Service planted 7,200 tree seedlings at Kapsaret Forest, Uasin Gishu County as part of the ongoing National Tree Planting Campaign.
Setting Precedence
Mr. Thomas Kiptoo the County conservator who spoke as the event got underway was equally impressed and grateful to the Arsenal Kenya Supporters Club, Eldoret branch for taking the noble initiative to participate in the national tree conservation drive.
He said,”We thank you for your time and resources. At first, we thought it’s just another group expressing interest with no follow-up, but it has proved to be otherwise. I am informed that you are from different professionals and that is very encouraging. This exercise today will be included as one of the major activities undertaken in the county as we build up to the National Tree Planting Day which will be presided over by CS Tobiko.”
Collective Responsibility
Kenya currently has a 7 percent forest cover which is a direct threat to the ecosystem. To hit the target of 15 percent forest cover by 2022, as set by the government, we need to plant at least 235million trees an activity that we all need to get involved. The 7,200 trees planted by Arsenal Kenya Supporters, Eldoret Branch, is an excellent step to towards achieving this goal, although a lot more needs to be done.
While acknowledging this fact, the Eldoret Arsenal supporters group chairman, Mr. Kareithi Wanaina, said,”We are particularly happy to have planted around 7,200 trees which is a bit short from our target of 10,000 trees. We are coming soon to do the rest and if possibly surpass that amount. We also look forward to furthering engagements with all stakeholders on matters environment in the country as it will be our pleasure to get involved.”
Mr. Kareithi went further the thank the Eldoret Arsenal Supporters branch members for their dedication and selflessness to conserving the environment, he said,”I wish to thank the members for taking up the exercise with lots of positivity despite the rainy morning. I was a great turnout and a noble course. We also wish to thank the Kenya Forest Service officials for accepting our request and giving us the invite.”
