PROJECT NAME: Sosiani Primary School Library Project #sosianiwasome
OBJECTIVE: Putting up a fully functional library at the school
Book Drive run by PaceMaker International
Sosiani Primary School Background
Sosiani Primary School, located in the environs of the Elgon View Area of Eldoret town, serves mostly the children of the domestic workers in the area. Most of the children are from the surrounding slum areas. Their parents are from the lower class of the society, barely being able to afford the provision of basic minimum food, water, and shelter.
The two biggest needs of the school are food and provision of supplementary reading material. To cater for the problem of food, The Mary Meals Organization donated a feeding program to the school, which provides the students with lunch meals on school days.
However, the school has not been able to deal with the absence of supplementary reading material in the form of story books and extra curriculum books, thus this appeal to donate used or new books to the Sosiani Primary School library project.
The students at the school are, through the years, showing an increased interest in improving their literacy skills. They have used the available text books to do their class work, homework and extra work. However, these available books have been scarce.
Students have had to share, with up to six students using a single book. This poses a challenge since the students must finish homework in school before they go home due to an insufficient number of books.
Other times, the students have wanted to read story books, but since they have none at their disposal, they have been forced to depend on the literature in the curriculum books to source for story books, even for library sessions. This has affected the ability of the students to properly read and to an extent, to write, and to find other avenues to learn English and Kiswahili. The head teacher also noted that those two subjects, being both languages, haven’t performed as well as other subjects
The teachers have also been faced with similar challenges, as they struggle to find reading material with which to conduct library lessons, as well as when they are sourcing for information to supplement that provided in the syllabus books. The students’ lack of exposure to reading material has dismally affected the students’ performance, thus bringing the teachers out as inefficient.
This appeal is, therefore, both student and community driven. This book drive shall help the students, who have shown a keen interest in reading, to improve their literacy skills. Stocking up the library shall also create an enabling environment for the teachers to teach since they shall have access to supplementary teaching material.
